Sligo RFC continued their build-up to the upcoming League season when they were invited to take part in the prestigious Navan High Kings Tournament last Saturday August 23rd. This was the first year the High King tournament involved full fifteen man teams, with six junior teams, Navan, Clogher Valley, Sligo, Clonmel, Cill Dara, and Ashbourne taking part. The teams were split into two groups of three and with a minimum of two games to be played on the day; it proved to be the first real test of Sligo’s rigorous pre-season fitness training. Sligo have been invited to play in the Navan High Kings Tournament of Junior rugby next Saturday in what will be a real test of stamina as they will play a minimum of three matches. It is planned to have six Junior sides from around the country with such sides as Clonmel and Clogher valley present. All the sides will be top Junior sides from their respective provinces so this will be a great test for the Sligo lads.
This trip will be used to see as many players as possible and it will also serve as a good bonding exercise for the squad. For the new players this will be an ideal opportunity for them to show what they are capable of and also to get to know the rest of the squad .
Pool 1: Sligo, Navan, Clogher Valley
Pool 2: Clonmel, Cill Dara, Ashbourne.
Teams from each pool play each other and then the 1st team from each pool will play off for the trophy. Also the second placed in each pool play each other and likewise the third placed sides. This ensures each side will get three games.
Sligo’s first outing of the season to Northern neighbours Enniskillen proved to be an eventful one mainly off the pitch. Actually getting to the grounds proved to be more difficult than playing the opposition. Following the recent very heavy rainfall the route was flooded around Glenfarne and they detoured on to a by road over the mountains. On this route some further flooding was encountered with one of the cars stalling in the flood. The forwards and backs alike put their fitness to the test when they had to roll up the trousers legs and push the car to dry ground. Despite the adversity they finally got to the pitch at three o’clock and the match went ahead later than planned.
Sligo brought a mixed group of youth and experience with them with the idea of giving everyone a run out. This being the first game for both sides it took a while for the teams to settle into any kind of rhythm but when they did they served up a decent match and one that will be beneficial to both coaches in their planning for the season ahead.
Overall Sligo will be very pleased with their day out achieving a draw and scoring three trys . The match ended 15 all and Sligo will be the happier of the sides as Enniskillen got two soft trys, one an intercept and the other a full length of the field score from a Sligo knock on. Also Sligo came from 15-5 down to earn a draw and they finished the stronger side.
Sligo’s trys came from Joe Sweeney(1) and Andrew Williams(2) with several other near misses. On the negative side both David Greene and Simon Coulter were injured and hopefully they will both be back soon. Obviously you cant take too much from these pre season friendlies but they are very important for the developing and fine tuning the team for the more difficult league games ahead. Next week will again be another opportunity to see some more as they travel to Navan RFC for 15 a side competition involving eight of the top Junior clubs in the country.
Sligo Squad; Martin Feeney, Ross Mannion, Adrian McHale, James Wilson, Jamie Bowes, Cathal Culhane, David Greene, Trevor Sweeney, Joe Sweeney, Colin Gorman, Ross O’Boyle, Dara Cox, James Coulter, Stewart O’Brien, Gavin Foley, Ted Mulvany, Ralf Lucey, Julian Rippon, Andrew Williams, Kakaber Machititze.
It’s that time of the year again as the 2008-2009 rugby season kicks off. This is an early start but with the first league game in mid September its important for the squad to get some time on the field together. A lot of work has gone in already both in terms of strengthening the squad and in terms of early season training.
Coach Joe Walsh says he is in-general happy with the response of the players in terms of effort put in on the training park and general commitment. Next Saturday Sligo will travel to Enniskllen for what will be a match cum training session. The coach says it will be good to see them finally working with the ball and getting used of the hits and the intensity, something that no training session can replace.
This will be an ideal opportunity for some new recruits to stake a claim and it is envisaged that there will be serious competition for starting spots come League time. There are several such friendlies to come between now and the official start to the league and these games will give the coach and management a better idea of their strongest starting 15.
The juvenile section of the club will start with an open day for registration (date to be arranged) when parents and kids can come along and register for the new season. This registration day has been a huge success in recent seasons and this should be no different with the huge popularity of this sector of the club. Watch the website for details.
